Why Harkness Memorial State Park Is My Favorite Engagement Photo Location in Connecticut

If you're searching for the perfect place for engagement photos in Connecticut, I have one location that I recommend over and over again: Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, Connecticut.

As a Connecticut wedding photographer, I've photographed couples all across New England, from mountaintops to vineyards to charming downtown streets. But Harkness continues to be one of my absolute favorite engagement session locations because it offers something that's surprisingly hard to find in one place.

Elegant gardens.

Historic architecture.

Wide open coastal views.

A beach at sunset.

It's like getting several engagement sessions wrapped into one.

A Connecticut Engagement Session With Endless Variety

One of the biggest reasons I love photographing at Harkness Memorial State Park is the incredible variety of backdrops. Instead of driving between multiple locations, we can create an entire gallery with completely different looks by simply walking through the park.

During a typical engagement session, we'll photograph around:

  • The stunning Eolia Mansion
  • The beautifully maintained formal gardens
  • Stone staircases and ivy-covered architecture
  • Tree-lined pathways
  • Open rolling lawns
  • The rocky shoreline and sandy beach
  • Long Island Sound at sunset

Perfect for Couples Who Want Editorial & Candid

One thing I hear from couples all the time is:

"We love the elegant photos...but we also want the natural ones."

That's exactly why Harkness works so well.

The mansion and gardens give us those timeless, editorial portraits, while the beach, walking paths, and open lawns naturally invite movement, laughter, and genuine connection.

Your gallery won't feel overly posed.

It'll feel like you.

Best Time of Year for Engagement Photos at Harkness

Honestly? It's beautiful almost year-round, but if I had to choose favorites:

Spring (April to June)

Fresh flowers, blooming gardens, soft pastel colors, and comfortable temperatures.

Summer (June to August)

Lush greenery, vibrant gardens, and incredible sunsets over Long Island Sound.

Early Fall (September to October)

Warm golden light, fewer crowds, and crisp evenings that photograph beautifully.

I almost always recommend scheduling your session during golden hour, about 90 minutes before sunset. The softer light creates that dreamy, romantic look everyone loves.

What Should You Wear?

Harkness has such an elegant feel that I usually recommend outfits that complement the location.

Think:

Neutral colors

Soft earth tones

Flowing dresses

Linen shirts

Texture over busy patterns

Many couples even bring two outfits.

One dressier look for the mansion and gardens.

One more casual outfit for the beach.

It creates incredible variety in your gallery without needing a second location.
